Program Updates


Girls on the Run is a nationwide health and wellness/phys ed program run by many area elementary and middle schools. It has not been offered to homeschoolers until now!
Berrien Springs Partnership is opening their teams to any area homeschooler without being part of the Partnership!
What it is: see

Where: Berrien Springs, Sylvester Elementary, Rm #43, gym and HS gym balcony
When: Thursdays, 2-3:30 AND Fridays, 12:30-2:00 beginning wk of March 12-May 31st.
Who can join: Girls, grades 3-5 and grades 6-8 (separate teams of 8-15 for grades 3-5/6-8)
Cost: free for Partnership students. $60 for all others - Includes new New Balance tennis shoes, GOTR shirt and 5K event shirt, snacks, fellowship with other girls and positive role model staff. Scholarships are available; just ask to apply.
Teachers/Coaches: Sarah Counsellor (formerly Sarah Stewart, formerly homeschooled, now certified teacher) and Sharon Haynes (coach on Fridays) We are also looking for more volunteer coaches please Older teens welcome to apply!
We need more students to join with our Partnership students to have enough girls on each team, so please consider this as "spring training!" Parents not required to stay or help unless you'd like to volunteer

Spring Registration

Please use the Link to Register from our homepage on the school's site.


Online registration begins on Sun., Nov. 27th at 5:00 p.m. through the link on the website.  Current families will not have to submit any paperwork, though the attachments will still come automatically with your email confirmation.

Seated classes will begin the week of Jan. 9th.  Virtuals may be changed at this time as long as at least 80% of the fall semester's class choice(s) requirement has been completed by the end of the semester.  Your fall virtuals will still be active over Christmas break. 
Community classes will begin at different times in Jan., please visit our website periodically as we post that information when we receive it.

Only themes should change for our seated classes.  Almost everything will still be available, please visit our seated class page next week for more details.  We are looking at one or two more fun virtual options for our youngest group of students, and hoping to keep all of our Community locations plus more!

NEW-  Seated Elementary Art Class now offered every other week for 2 hours

If you are looking for an elementary art class that you don't have to drive to every week, considering trying Elementary Art Mon 1:00-3:00 or Wed 9:00-11:00 every other week.  See seated classes.

NEW Virtual Classes 

New this semester we have three new virtual classes we are pleased to offer.

Music Learning Community is available for grades 1-5 and all levels of music ability.  There are 4 levels of instruction and many fun games to practice music theory, note reading, rhythm, keyboard elements, pitch and more.  Try some free samples of their games

We will also offer two classes at Kahn Academy which are geared toward older students.  Art History and Finance.  Kahn Academy tracks which videos you watch so there will not be any required quizzes.  You will be given a list of required lessons to watch.  You will need a google or facebook login to access this class.  Preview the video lectures to see if this would be a good fit for you.

Dealing with Feelings is a kidshealth.com based class in moodle.  It is similar to the previous health classes, listen to lessons, do activities and take quizzes.  Grades 1-7

Robotics

The Spring Robotics Schedule has been posted.  Robotics classes will meet at Eastside Elementary School in Niles starting in January. The Robotics classrooms will be on the 2nd floor at  315 N. 4th Street, Niles  

***NEW***  Woodworking for Homeschoolers!

Elementary level class:

Mondays, 4-5:45 p.m. First class meets at Krasl Art Center
Class at Tom Hurst's woodshop (Krasl teacher) St. Joseph, MI.

Class is designed for students age 6-9.   The class will be taught is a fully equipped woodworking shop.  Instruction will be task and operations centered with topics presented as needed to complete usable projects.  Shop safety will be stressed and presented on the first class session.  Shoes that completely cover the foot and long hair tied back are required.  Safety glasses will be provided.  Field trips are possible.  Parents are welcome to attend class sessions.
This is a “Make it, Take it” class

Required materials will be provided.
Class will be limited to 6 students

MS level Woodworking class: see above.  Small furniture piece, turning with lathes

Mondays, 6-8:00 p.m.

Spring 2012: The following is a guideline to what classes a student must take and what classes are optional:


ELEMENTARY OR MIDDLE SCHOOL students :
      MUST take at least one class from column A - Seated Classes (May take a 2nd),
      MUST take two classes from column B - Virtuals, and
      MAY, but is not required to, take up to two classes from column C - Community     
      Resource Classes          

HIGH SCHOOL students:  (unless taking Career and Technical Education course “CTE”)
      MUST take at least one class from column A (May take a 2nd),
      MUST take one class from column B  and
      MAY, but is not required to, take up to two classes from column  C

All classes require a min. of 80% attendance or completion.
